The New Green:
An industrious, LEED certified architect was looking for a home for himself and his growing family. He noticed a distinct lack of homes – new or old— that included elements of “green” construction, affordability, sustainability and style in the
Form Function-Plus:
With concern for a thoughtful, efficient and well designed home he shaped the concepts of Form Function-plus: the harmonizing of design, energy efficiency, renewable materials, durability and ease of care.
He says, “I added the "plus" to L. Sullivan’s famous quote, “form (follows) function" to indicate that over time I think it was forgotten that at the core of this saying actually stands "beautiful is functional"! My feeling is that in the fifties... seventies... especially during the 1990s all too often any kind of sense and beauty was stripped away from architecture using "function" as an excuse.”
21greenHOME:
The result is 21greenHOME,
I. Energy Efficiency
II. Resource Conservation
III. Healthy Space
IV. Intelligent Ownership
With the strength of his community, our green construction and sustainability champion decided to do it himself. He came up with a design that integrates green elements and collaborates with the dynamic pitches that make
Living There:
In the hills above
Drive up, park and plug your hybrid into the charging station. Notice the elements of wood, concrete and steel throughout the 2++ bedroom, 2.5 bathroom home. Ascend the generous stairs to the entry – a green door, of course – and notice the renewable bamboo floors, high ceilings and steel railings inside.
Pass through the floor to ceiling sliding door to the master retreat where you will find a private deck, a separate office or studio space, access to the wine cellar, a walk-in closet and the master bathroom with a soaking tub, stall shower, dual sinks, European style wall mounted commode, and high quality lighting and fixtures.

Upstairs is the main living space; which includes the living room with a fireplace and a multi-media built-in and dining area, the open kitchen with a breakfast bar, laundry, the library, a guest lavatory and the second bedroom suite with a full bathroom.

To integrate the inside with the outside, all windows and exterior doors are thoughtfully positioned to maximize light, ventilation and outdoor access. Generous ceiling heights (9’ – 14’) increase the volume of the space and the flexible floor plan makes for easy entertaining. The kitchen is open to the main living area – perfect because the party always ends up in the kitchen.

For quiet meditation, reading or writing, go through a floor to ceiling sliding door, just off the living room, and you are in the library. This space may double as a guest room or media center. It’s part of the flexibility of the design; your house, your space, you decide.
